Time Magazine, 1960: "To Hindus, one of the holiest places in the universe is the city of Allahabad in northern India. It is holy because it is one of the four spots where the urn of immortality dripped its nectar in the struggle between the gods and the demons. And it is also holy because it marks the confluence of three sacred rivers—the muddy Ganges, the blue Jumna and the invisible Sarasvati, which is supposed to flow underground."
Kumbh Mela is a mass Hindu pilgrimage of faith in which Hindus gather at a sacred river for a bath in the river. It is held every third year at one of the four places by rotation: Haridwar, Allahabad (Prayag), Nasik and Ujjain. Thus the Kumbh Mela is held at each of these four places every twelfth year. Maha Kumbh Mela is held only at Prayag, every 144 years.
The major event of the festival is ritual bathing at the banks of the river in whichever town it is being held that is, Ganga in Haridwar, Godavari in Nasik, Kshipra in Ujjain and Sangam in Allahabad. Hindus of all caste and creed come from every nook and corner of the country.
"KUMBH"-a short video on Maha Kumbh 2013 was shot on the Paush Snan day (27th January 2013) at the Mela. Read our travel essay and check out the photo-album on the same only at http://www.etherealcolours.com/project/the-kumbh-experience/
