The Bajo people of Southeast Asia have a deep connection with the marine environment. As descendants of sea nomads, they traditionally roamed the ocean to fish and trade, but today, most live in coastal villages or on stilts over the water.

This short film focuses on the Bajo of Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia, highlighting their strong bond with the sea and the challenges small-scale fishing communities face. Impacted by overfishing, pollution, and biodiversity loss, they are struggling to survive.

In response, some have resorted to harmful fishing methods, putting the health of the reefs at risk and leaving their future in jeopardy.

Rather than counting the years, Kompakt celebrates milestones—and their 500th release is a landmark worth celebrating: a limited collector’s box set featuring 50 handpicked tracks across five colored LPs, a 10” vinyl, and a stunning 144-page artbook chronicling the Kompakt story from 1993 to the present.

Letter to San Zaw Htway is a short participatory documentary. In the aftermath Myanmar’s 2021 military coup, the filmmakers invited the loved ones of Burmese artist and activist San Zaw Htway to write letters to him: this film is composed of their words.

Synopsis:

The brutal military coup of February 1st of 2021 destroyed ten years of fragile democratic transition in Myanmar and has killed and imprisoned thousands.

The anonymous writers in this film seek inspiration from San Zaw Htway’s all too brief life to come to terms with the cruelty of this military regime. A student activist, he had been sentenced to 36 years in prison before being released during the country’s ill-fated democratic transition. He overcame his 13 years of prison with wisdom, resilience, and grace.

Filmed by Burmese cinematographer Bo Thet Htun, who followed the army’s take-over in the months after the coup, and by Petr Lom, who filmed together with San Zaw Htway over a period of four years.

This harrowing expedition pushed a group of mountaineers to the mental and physical brink; carving them Down To Nothing. A six-person team from The North Face and National Geographic attempted to summit an obscure peak in Myanmar (Hkakabo Razi) to determine if it is Southeast Asia’s highest point. The expedition members, led by The North Face athlete and Telluride mountaineer Hilaree O’Neill include, videographer Renan Ozturk, climber Emily Harrington, and National Geographic author Mark Jenkins, photographer Cory Richards, and basecamp manager Taylor Rees.

"Conrad Milster, Pratt Institute’s chief engineer, has worked in the Brooklyn power plant nearly his entire adult life. Starting as a mechanic in 1958, he later became one of only four chief engineers in the plant’s 127-year history, taking over the official duties in 1965. He’s been there ever since.
For the last six decades, Milster (now 79 years old) has lovingly maintained the nineteenth century steam engines that provide heat and hot water to Pratt’s campus. “We have our hands full,” says Milster. “If the plant stops in the winter, Pratt stops.”
In addition, Conrad is the person behind the infamous “Pratt Cats,” responsible for the 12-14 felines that wander the campus and call the steam plant home.
An important figure in Pratt’s history, Milster has extended his impact on the Pratt community through a generous gift—the Phyllis and Conrad Milster Endowed Scholarship—that provides scholarships in perpetuity to students in Pratt’s Industrial Design program. The scholarship is named for Milster and his late wife, Phyllis, who passed away in 2011."

A feature-length documentary, Kvadrat explores the realities of techno DJing, using the example of Andrey PUSHKAREV, a Russian DJ recognized worldwide. Filmed as a hybrid between a road-movie and a music video, the film not only illustrates the festive atmosphere of techno night clubs, but also reveals the lesser known side of this profession: weeks of track selection, lengthy travel, difficult schedule. The film suggests to reconsider the stereotype of a popular musician, to find out whether the artist is happy, to ponder what’s most important to him and his audience? Shot in Switzerland, France, Hungary, Romania and Russia, the film omits the typical documentary elements: no interviews, no explanatory voice-over, no facts, no figures. The visuals and the techno music replace them, leaving the detailed interpretation to the viewer.

"The Small Carpathian Mountains is a mountain landscape unit, which is titled to be a mountain bridge between Alps and the Carpathians. I focused and was interested in the south-west half.
The Small Carpathians are not very high, but despite this fact they stand out the lowland surroundings. It is the green island in wide land neighborhood. Do not look for high rocky peaks, but the deep wood forest is full of natural wonders, which this mountain unit can be proud of.

In the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, flying the pipa is more than a leisurely escape from on-the-ground realities—it’s a venue for battle, with the entire sky as the arena. Pipa designs and airborne “cutting” strategies have been passed through generations, from rooftop to rooftop. Filmmakers Guilherme Tensol and Leandro HBL spent time in Rocinha, Rio’s largest favela, among its young pipa warriors and elder statesmen, absorbing their secrets and documenting their stories.
